Monday, April 26th 2010 @ 1:26 PM

Roy Fong’s fateful encounter with tea began at age six, when he would interrupt his walk to school to watch Hong Kong day laborers’ impromptu gong fu brewing sessions. Later, a chance visit to Hong Kong’s teahouse district unexpectedly set his life on a new course. He began importing Chinese tea to the U.S. and, in 1993, he and his wife Grace opened the original Imperial Tea Court in San Francisco. Since then, Fong has enlightened and inspired a generation of tea enthusiasts, who visit from all over the world to enjoy the finest Chinese teas available in America at Imperial Tea Court’s San Francisco and Berkeley locations.

Widely recognized as an authority on Chinese tea, Fong published his first book, Great Teas of China, in 2009. He has written for Kyoto Journal and Tea Magazine and has been featured in many publications, including the New York Times, Forbes, Wine Spectator, Gourmet, and Sunset Magazine. He has appeared on the National Public Radio program “Talk of the Nation” and on several television programs, including an episode of the History Channel’s “Modern Marvels” series. During a term as Head of Research for the International Tea Masters Association, Fong spent several years directing and personally overseeing the Lotus Heart Dragon Well tea program in the West Lake area of Hangzhou, China. In 2010 Fong is focusing on starting tea farms in California and Shaanxi, China.
